Finally, Poker Content

Last poker content posted: 4/25/08

Stuff has gone way wrong since then.

1) job stuff. standard.
2) ended 25nl Poker Heater with 50nl Poker cooler. >CLICKY<
3) cashed out half of bankroll to deal with RL stuff
4) stopped watching poker videos, WTF?
5) STOPPED POSTING.

Some stuff has gone right.

1) have run OK at 25nl since...Monday
2) stayed healthy - gym every day, eating right every day
3) spent <$20/week socializing
4) developing great contacts
5) offered two jobs already, turned both down
6) have flopped quads 9 times, winning nearly 10 BIs, wtf??

So destroying donkeys has been less and less of a priority for me, and more something to do in my spare time when I can't do any more calling/interview/searching. Which is good -- I don't think I play my best game when I'm mentally worried about the monies.

anyway, some of the fun hands that led me into destruction!!!

Obviously, some of it is just plain running badly, but some hands show suprising stupidity by yours truly. I guess that heater made me retarded, lol.

in retrospect, checking the flop was stupid. checking the turn is ATROCIOUS OOP, as is 4betting here. how does he ever, ever, ever have less than a set, much less a straight?

Here I see a large PF raise, hit the flop hard, and opt to checkraise against the opener and a caller. I'm scared when he calls, but am curious that he shoves to me. Marginal call at best. Nothing to do but make a note that he stacks off 200bb deep w/ TPTK. Sadly, I do so with LESS. BAD.

So yeah, I'm digging my way out of a pile of shit. I must have been blessed on my last heater, because the bad beats are piling up. Sadly, I am definitely affected by bad play / bad beats. I want to move up and reach my goals sooooo badly, and a few of the first-posted hands threw me into a spewy mindset.

Definitely let tilt get to me at 50nl. Expected better play by the opponents, saw some HORRIBLE players, then tried to run over everybody (respect my LAGGINESS) and got owned.

*sigh*

not that lots of great play didn't happen, I just don't feel like dwelling on it now. I'll be back to posting w/ mah sparkly new template. hope it doesn't burn your eyes.
Comments:
First commments, some of those hands you linked really aren't running badly, imo.

Hand 1: Something is F'd up with that HH. I don't have stats on this guy, so I'm not sure how you got it in, exactly. JJ is strong, but against people at $50nl, I'd hope he was pretty decently loose. Thankfully, you're 3handed so the relative strength of your hand goes up somewhere, however, when the button folds and it's just SB vs BB in a 3handed game, it's the same deal as everyone folding to the SB in a 6handed game. You're a bit deep here too.

Hand 2: Be more cautious about playing limped pots for big money. Wonky two pairs, baby sets, odd 3gapped straights can all show up. Here, I like your flop bet and I think you can call his raise as well to evaluate on the turn. I'd still be stacking off on the turn for sure (good job getting it in there) as he'll be paying you with a wide range of hands. If the turn came off with anything other than a T or 9, though, get prepped to be letting this go for a big bet.

Hand 3: Once you flop this, obv cooler. HOWEVER, I wouldn't be calling this preflop. You're simply not deep enough. The only way you can make this profitable is if the guy is SUPER predictable (e.g. check/folds all the time with "missed" hands like AK, AJ here). Otherwise, you won't make enough money here, even with full stacks. Think of it this way....you have to:

1. Hit your hand
2. Have the guy get all in with you
3. Hope you hand stays best (even if it is the best here!)

Don't overestimate your implied odds. I've been folding a lot of these marginal spots lately.

On what you showed on your blog....

Hand 1: Flop: I'd lead this, or C/R it.

Turn: This card sucks for you as it's a bit scary for some portion of villain's range (he won't wanna stack off with AT+ now) and your hand may be second best now. I'd still go for a C/R in this spot, but if I'm 3bet I'd have to fold it. IT'S A LIMPED POT -- he could have anything, and we have the weakest combo of two pair. That means he'd have to be stacking off with a one pair hand if his hand has value here. Is he doing this? Probably not. Another line would be leading this turn and flatting his raise. We can then check/call a weak river bet, or fold if he bombs it (also depends on what falls on the river).

Hand 1 Takeaway: As a general rule, I play bottom two pair fast and am sometimes NOT stacking off with (depends on the actual board and the villain).

Hand 2: Flop: Flopping the joint is fun. Stop slowplaying! Our hand is COMPLETELY disguised, and this is also a great board for villain's to bluff back at us on because it doesn't hit our range. If you're going to check here, C/R would be good. You need to get money in this pot. Don't worry about keeping multiple villains in; if it gets HU, that's fine.

Turn: I don't mind the lead here, but you're gonna force him to play perfectly. C/R big could be a good play if you feel he's going to be a large portion of his draws. He's also shown his propensity to bet on the flop, and it looks like we have a drawing hand or a weak pair, so we could C/R here, however, that would leave us in a bit of an awkward spot if he just flat calls our C/R.

River: As played, I definitely bet this smaller. I think bombing this river won't get value from a ton of hands which you have beat when you lead the turn. If you'd check called the turn, it would be more believable that you had a draw which you then missed and are bluffing on the river, therefore he'd call your PSB lighter. If you bet smaller and he shoves, you're in a tough spot; I'd go to stats on that decision. As you bet it, you have to call that shove as you committed yourself.

Hand 2 Takeaway: When you raise a disguised hand and hit on a board, NEVER SLOWPLAY. Also, one of the reasons you need to inflate the pot on flops such as this are that there are a decent portion of cards in the deck which will hurt you. This doesn't always mean cards which will make your hand second best as it happened here, but cards that will fall which will slow villains down (in this case, a T, 9, or J on the turn simply fuck up how much money you're going to be able to win here).

Hand 3:

Preflop: Big bet preflop should put you on the alert if you haven't seen one of these from him already with his shown hand. Calling is marginal here.

Flop: You say you hit the flop hard, but you really don't. You flopped top pair OOP and you're deep stacked -- any time you get it all in here against the preflop raiser, you'll have the second best hand. Hitting the flop hard basically means that you would be willing to stack off with your hand on the flop as you have good equity versus your villain's stack off range. While I don't LOVE check calling this flop, it's the best option you have. Raising signifies SUPER strength and juices up a pot OOP. Also, when you do this the size of the pot is so large that you're committed to any blank turn. Suchs that check calling would give your opponents a "free" card, but you have to play this Way Ahead / Way Behind when you're this deep. This should be your plan for the hand when you're calling preflop unless if something changes drastically. C/R here ensures that you're folding out all of his range that you have beat (TT, JJ, QQ), keeping in the hands which beat you (KK, AK, AA, 99), which forces him to play perfectly. The only hands in his range which he'd call and you're head of are ones like AcJc, AcQc, which isn't a large enough portion of his range to warrant such a play. Check/call and hope for a blank turn.

Turn: As played, this is an aggression question. Given our actions on the flop, we planned to stack off with the hand because we felt we were best and nothing has changed with the board texture on the turn, as such, our plan should be the same. Check/folding is a BIG mistake here given the fact that you're committed. So it's a question of whether he would call enough of the time with hands you beat, or if you check, is he pushing bluffs often enough to have a check/call line? If he was dumb enough to call your CR with QQ on the turn, I'd just shove it in here. Otherwise, check/call.

i KNOW where the mistakes are.

i'm just still making them. I see them every time after the fact.

after.
